- Foods that serves as good prebiotics, which feed healthy gut flora, which in turns enhance immunity.
The following recipe is simply a guide to help those of you interested in creating your own “Immune”.
40% Organic Baobab Powder – an important food to indigenous Africans where the Baobab tree is native. Has immune boosting qualities due to it’s extremely high antioxidant levels, evidenced by it’s ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) value being considerably higher than goji berries, pomegranates and blueberries. Organic Baobab Powder particularly high in vitamin C which is the great immune system booster ( believed to be some 6 x more concentrated in baobab than oranges).
Baobab powder is also relatively cheap in comparison to some of the alternatives listed below.
An alternative to Baobab Powder, boasting the same (or higher) level of vitamin C, include Camu Camu, Kakadu Plum, Rosehips or Acerola.
15% Goji Berry Powder – For thousands of years, Goji Berries have been revered in traditional Chinese Medicine. Known as the “longevity fruit, they are particularly renowned for their immune enhancing qualities.
Goji berries contain a unique polysaccharide with a chemical structure similar to that found in echinacea and maitake mushrooms which are well known for their ability to enhance the immune system. These polysaccharides provide cells with sustenance that supports healthy immunity and enable cells to communicate more effectively with each other.
Goji berries are also a highly rich source of vitamin C and zinc, both of which are known to protect against disease and aid in recovery. Finally, goji berry’s fiber content and polysaccharides provide perfect food to healthy intestinal bacteria, making them an excellent prebiotic.
10% Siberian Ginseng – Siberian ginseng was traditionally used to prevent colds and flu and to increase energy, longevity, and vitality. It is widely used in Russia as an “adaptogen.” An adaptogen is a substance that is supposed to help the body better cope with either mental or physical stress.
10% Inulin Powder – is a basically a soluble fiber (ours is derived from Chicory Root). Inulin is classed as a fructan. Fructans cannot be digested in the upper GI tract, so travel through undigested until reaching the colon, where it feeds and enhances bifidobacteria residing there. Gut flora are to a large extent our first line of immune defense, so Inulin being the preferred food source (or prebiotic) of gut flora, plays an intrinsic role in promoting healthy immune function.
*note that a lot of large food manufacturers these days (particularly yogurt makers) make “prebiotic” claims by including inulin in their foods.
5% Organic Chlorella Powder – Studies have shown that chlorella can increase the resistance to viral infection and enhance the ability to kill bacteria. Chlorella has another amazing immune promoting property referred to as “chlorella growth factor” as it quadruples itself every twenty hours, which dramatically increases the rate of rebuilding and healing in tissues, and multiples the growth of beneficial microflora which in turn dramatically improves the immune function.
2-3% Organic Turmeric Powder – Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is anti-viral, anti-fungal and some studies have suggested that it may help protect against cancer.
2-3% Shilajit Powder – Referred to in Ayurveda is “Conqueror of Mountains and Destroyer of Weakness”, has traditionally been believed to be able to conquer any sickness and disease process with the proper dosages at the appropriate time. Shilajit is composed of humus and plant material that has been compressed within layers of rock in the Himalayan mountains. The active principle of shilajit is fulvic acid (60-80%) which is water-soluble and moves through the system quickly and acts as a extremely potent antioxidant. It is able to promote the movement of minerals into muscles, tissues and bones and acts as an adaptogenic substance that helps people adapt to environmental stressors more effectively.
