Whey Protein Vs Vegan Sources (Hemp, Pea, Rice, Pumpkin Seed)

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

The following article https://www.superfoodly.com/amino-acid-profile-whey-hemp-pea-rice-pumpkin-protein/ gives a good overview of the differences.

In addition to Hemp, Pea, Rice and Pumpkin Seed protein, we also offer Sacha Inchi Protein powder and Alfalfa Sprout Powder as two other high protein, plant sources.

Note too that Superfood’s by their very definition inherently have relatively high, (complete) protein content. Maca and Goji Berries for instance are both around 20% protein by dry weight.

Wanna make a great tasting Vegan Protein Powder? Pick your flavour!

Lets face it, in an absolute sea of Protein powders boasting this and that – it can be hard to stand out from the crowd.

Add to this too the advantage established brands have in gaining the trust of potential buyers and it can certainly be tough to get your new Protein Powder off and running in the market.

We are constantly looking at who is doing what out in the Australian market and whilst there are some good innovative products coming out all the time, we look at the competition and enjoy coming up with product formulations that are even better.

One of our recent discoveries is a natural food flavourings company from the US who we’ve begun importing powders from.  Natures Flavors offers an array of unique and exotic flavoring powders, not being seen in the market here.

We think it’s a great way to differentiate yourself from the pack.

Finally… Hemp foods for Legal Sale in Australia!

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

On April 28th 2017, FSANZ (Food Standards Australia and New Zealand) finally gave approval for Hemp seed products to be legally sold as a food here in Australia & New Zealand.

With a 6 month period in effect whilst regulations are changed and can take effect, Hemp Foods will be legally be able to be sold from November 2017.

As a food, Hemp is in every sense of the word a “superfood”.  It’s boasts not only high omega-3 fatty acid content, but offers it’s precious omega-3’s at a ratio to omega 6 & omega 9 which is unique in being perfect for human absorption.

Hemp Protein too is perfect for human consumption, containing all 9 essential amino acids and is the only plant to make protein from Edestin, a highly digestible and optimum form of protein.

Protein powders are of course big business in the health food market these days.  Unfortunately the perception has often been that whey protein is superior to plant based proteins such as Pea protein, Rice protein or even Sacha Inchi protein.  Hemp Protein however out performs whey protein on virtually all fronts.

We source our Hemp Protein from Hemp Foods Australia, who manufacture a lovely fluffy green hemp protein powder that has been gently processed, retaining all of it’s valuable nutrient.  Most of the so-called “Hemp protein” that has been sold in the Australian market today  is white in colour and is in fact hemp flour, not hemp protein.

So then, in the weeks ahead we look forward to working with new and existing clients to bring to market Superfoods using Hemp Protein Powder or Hemp Seeds!

Wanting to Start a Business – Start with this Advice

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

Derek Sivers author of Anything You Want, and keynote speaker is someone I recommend to anyone starting out in business to check out his work..  I read Derek’s book just prior to Christmas last year at a pivotal time in the early life of Private Label Superfoods.

Six months into starting Private Label Superfoods, I was feeling slightly uncomfortable with my messaging, torn between wanting to appear established enough to be taken seriously, but at the same time wanting to remain authentic. Reading Derek’s story and then receiving some reassurance from Derek himself through some email exchange, convinced me to throw out the complicated stuff and just focus on being myself.

Below is a video Derek has posted on how to get started. I know Derek reads Steven Pressfield’s work which is epitomized in his slogan or “start before you’re ready”. Derek’s story is an inspiring example of this principle in action.  Enjoy (and then take action).

Private Label Supplements – 3 Ways to Make it Work for You

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

Despite slow overall economic growth the world over, the health industry continues to see strong growth year on year. In line with this growth, contract manufacturing of Private Label Supplements has become big business, as small to medium sized businesses wanting to launch health food products into the market have turned to food manufacturers to create private label supplements for them.

In the increasingly competitive health industry landscape, private label supplements give businesses the opportunity to positively differentiate themselves within a sea of competitors. For small businesses in particular, private label supplements give them a footing to compete with large businesses who with their large marketing budgets often crowd out their smaller competitors from mass media marketing channels.

As the following demonstrate though, private label supplements have given many of our clients the opportunity to use their products bearing their own logo in innovative ways to promote and build their brand.

1. Social Media Content – At a time when everyone is looking for interesting content to promote on a daily basis , the launch and ongoing promotion of your own private label supplements provides a highly relevant and credible means to reach out to your social marketplace.  Many of our clients who’ve launch a range of private label supplements through ourselves have particularly enjoyed the productive engagement they get with their existing customer base, who not only find another reason to deepen their relationship with their brand, but even better have the opportunity to share the event with their own network.

2. Healthcare Professionals (the add-on value effect) – Health Professionals such as Naturopaths, Personal Trainers, Health Coaches etc are often some of our most enthusiastic customers.  As an example we recently created a “custom blended” private label supplement for a Sydney based Optometrist. Our client wanted to make a “functional superfood” blend which she could offer her clients conscious of preserving “health health”. We therefore featured foods renowned for slowing macular degeneration, that were high in lutein, vitamin C and other antioxidants, including omega-3 fatty acids.

3. Gifts for Customers – perhaps retailing a private label food isn’t something that would have everyday relevance within your business. A packaged superfood bearing your company logo though can be an effective way to thank your customers for their business. Recently we took an order from a corporate customer we who purchased our “Trail Mix” superfood to include in christmas hampers they are sending to their valued customers in the weeks ahead. The “Trail Mix” bearing their company logo, represented an inexpensive way to positively associate themselves with health whilst promoting their brand.

The above represents just 3 of the ways our customers make private label supplements work for them.

Seeing the positive outcomes that private label supplements create for our clients is the most pleasing aspect of our business.

Private Label Supplements Australia – 5 Reasons to Get With It

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

Private Label Supplements Australia: The Market Opportunity

The vitamins and supplements industry here in Australia is believed to be worth about $1.5 billion a year.

According to Austrade, natural healthcare products are growing year on year at 7%.

Its little wonder then why when you walk into a store or market selling health foods these days, there is such a vast array of new brands trying to capture their share of a growing pie.

So why aren’t you getting your share?

Many of you reading this post will have clicked on it because you’ve thought about private labeling before, but like many, would have dismissed it because of the various barriers that exist in entering the market (particularly if food isn’t your primary business).

In a moment I’ll point how we here at Private Label Superfoods Australia have made it easy for any business to quickly, easily and cost effectively get their own branded superfoods in the market.

Before that though here are 5 Reasons why you should be have your own private label supplements australia.

1. Promote and build your brand, not somebody else’s.

You may have good reason to sell supplement of well known and trusted brands, but what about your customers that like would like to buy your brand?

2. Increase your profit margin by having your own “Home Brand”

All of the big retailers these days have their own “home” brands which compete favorably with established big brands. Creating your own products gives you the opportunity to do the same.

3. Set Yourself Apart

The health industry is extremely competitive. Establishing your brand  to stand out for the sea of others can be challenging. Having private label supplements has to one of the best ways to set you apart from others. When your customers like your business, they love taking a piece of it home with them. A private label supplement with your logo on the product raises your credibility in the eyes of not only your existing customers and clients, but prospective ones too.

4. Brand Exposure

Your own private label supplements not only give you an obvious new way to promote your brand on your website and externally via advertising or social media, physical products are “walking advertisers” for you.  When one of your loyal customers who loves your buys your private label supplement to give to their friend, you have no better endorsement for your brand.

5. Connection

Most of us working in the health care are passionate about what we do. Your business is very much a reflection of you. Putting a truly valuable health food out into the market with your brand on it, only adds to the connection you have with what you do.

Top 5 Benefits of Kale – A True Superfood

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

It took us a while, but finally here in Australia over the last couple of years we’ve discovered the amazing benefits of Kale.

I remember only a few years ago living in Sydney having to travel across town to visit a particular outdoor market where I could buy it. At that point Kale was still relatively unheard of, which seems strange now when you consider how wildly popular it is. Everyone it seems wants a piece of kale these days, evidenced by the amount of kale recipes that abound and it’s inclusion in so many health foods and supplements.

We ourselves feature Kale Powder as a our “hero” ingredient in our “Greens Power” Superblend. In a market place where these days virtually any food can get labelled a “superfood”,  here are our top 5 benefits of Kale and why we think it truly deserves to be called a superfood.

Top 5 Benefits of Kale

1. It’s Protein & Iron Content  – Kale has been referred to as the “new beef” due to it’s high protein content for a vegetable and gram for gram it contains more iron than beef.  For a vegetable Kale’s ratio of carbohydrate to protein of 3:1 is unrivalled and what’s more Kale contain all 9 essential amino acids. As I written here before on protein foods, the digestibility of the source is perhaps the most important measure of it’s value. Kale has everything and more that animal protein offers and digests far more easily and completely.

2. Calcium Content – extending the above connection, Kale has also been referred to  “vegetarian cow” due to its extraordinary calcium content (when of course grown in quality soil). Similar again to the above, its calcium also absorbs considerably better than calcium derived from milk (believed to be as much as 25% better). This is at least partly due to milk calcium being coated with the “sticky” protein casein which makes it much harder to liberate in the stomach for later absorption.

3. Eye Health –  Vitamin A, lutein and zeaxanthin are the 3 most important vitamins to promoting / preserving eye health. No other vegetable rivals Kale for content of these 3 vital vitamins that prevent macular degeneration and other retinal diseases associated with ultraviolet light-induced oxidative stress.

*Related to Kale’s association with Eye Health, we recently formulated a “custom blend” for a Optometrist using Kale as the “hero ingredient”. We combined Kale and other superfoods renowned for their eye health promoting qualities such as Lucuma, goji berry and chlorella to come up with a product our Optometrist called “Vision Support“.

4. Antioxidant / Immune Support –  Kale contains some 80mg of vitamin C per serving which puts it right up there as a antioxidant / immune system supporting food. Also, kale, like most cruciferous vegetables, is very high in several other well researched cancer preventing compounds, such as sulforaphane.

5. Unique Omega Fatty Acid Profile – you often hear these days that one or our major diet causing health issue is due to our unhealthy ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids found in blood serum. Our modern diets give us an overabundance of foods high in omega 6 (i.e processed foods / oils), and typically not enough foods rich in omega 3 (fish and good quality meat and eggs (yolk), along with good plants sources such chia/flax seed, walnuts, avocado etc.

Kale certainly helps correct the imbalance due to its extraordinary content of omega 3 fatty acids, being one of the very few plants that has a higher content of omega 3 than omega 6 fatty acids. This combined with its abundance of fat soluble antioxidants makes it a wonderful natural protector of cardiovascular health.

So there you go, lots of very good reasons to start enjoying the benefits of kale in your diet everyday!

  • top 5 protein superfoods

Top 5 Protein Superfoods

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

As sit here about to compile my list of The Top 5 Protein Superfoods, I do so knowing that the subject of nutrition is already in itself a contentious one, and especially so when talking about protein intake.

So before my list of the Top 5 Protein Superfoods, I’ll explain quickly my overall view, followed by some qualifying statements.

Overall when talking about Protein intake, I believe the research indicates that we don’t actually need anywhere near as much as many of us have been led to believe. What is most important is that we consume high quality protein that assimilates well.

  1. Protein intake needs to be in accordance with our constitutional type.

Going by the well known Metabolic Typing ®  System developed by William Willcott there are broadly three metabolic types; ( Protein Type, Carbohydrate Type and Mixed Type). Obviously a Protein Type is going to have relatively more proportion of protein in their diet than the other two types.

  1. Even assuming you’re a “protein type”, you don’t need to (or even should be) eating a lot of protein.

Here in Australia the average daily adult protein consumption is 92 grams. According to Metabolic Specialist Dr Ron Rosedale, per 1kg of body weight, the vast majority of us need no more than 0.8gm of protein per 1 kg of body weight.  That figure would therefore in fact be high for a Carbohydrate Type, whilst considered the “right amount” even for a Protein Type.

Now for a Protein Type who exercises particularly hard, Dr Rosedale believes that person might have reason to increase their protein up to 1gm per 1kg of body weight. The point he stresses though is that having more protein intake than needed, doesn’t do any additional benefit. In fact it only puts more stress on the body, and eventually decreases our insulin and leptin sensitivity (which may in turn lead to metabolic conditions such as weight gain and diabetes).

  1. Quality and Digestibility of Protein Needs to be a Considered.

Certainly a food being a “complete (or near to) protein” i.e containing all 9 essential amino acids needs to be met in order for it be be a “quality” protein.

Animal protein (meat and eggs) meet that criteria, whereas many plant-based protein foods don’t. Nonetheless, no animal proteins make my list of The Top 5 Protein Superfoods. The reason is because of digestibility.

According to Dr Gabriel Cousens animals protein are only assimilated at between 15-18%. (Incidentally, the protein in eggs (when consumed raw) is the most highly assimilated protein at around 45%).

  1. Hemp – Hemp foods are widely considered the best vegan source of protein on the planet. A near complete protein, containing some 33% pure, highly digestible protein, it’s hard to argue with hemp protein being number one. Hemp foods such as hemp seeds also deliver a near perfect ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 essential fatty acids. Even better, when processed into Hemp Protein Powder you having a powder containing typically 50% protein.
  2. Bee Pollen – is the most complete food found in nature. Protein makes up approximately 25% of bee pollen, with that protein containing 21 essential amino acids, that are especially easy to assimilate due to the incredible amount of digestive enzymes its contains.  Additionally, bee pollen contains nearly all B vitamins, along with 25 vitamins and 25 minerals.
  3. Spirulina – Gram for gram spirulina has the highest content of protein on the planet, boasting 65-70% of it’s weight made up from protein. Further Spirulina is believed to be about 85-95% assimilatable. A tablespoon of Spirulina, delivers about 4.5gm of protein, along with a host of other valuable nutrients, including essential fatty acids, GLA and trace minerals.
  4. Goji Berries – are a complete protein, containing in fact 18 amino acids, included in a Trail Mix containing other protein rich foods such as nuts and seeds, you gain a wonderful protein kick with two of three handfuls. Of course Goji berries and even more renowned for their incredible amounts of antioxidants, along with iron and essential fatty acids.
  5. Rice Protein Powder – whilst technically less a food and more a supplement added to foods such as smoothies or yogurt, I’ve listed Rice Protein as Protein Powders have become such a popular food item to health conscious people. Rice Protein Powder, I believe after Hemp Protein Powder, rates as the next best. I say this still, despite rice protein, not being a complete protein. What makes it the next best protein powder after hemp protein powder is it’s digestibility. It also rates highly for taste and it’s ability to blend well (which many protein don’t).

On the subject of Protein Powders, Whey Protein is often marketed heavily as being ideal. Nutrition is very much a science where truth, very much comes from which side of the research you’re coming from. This  article I believe spells out some compelling arguments against Whey Protein.

Summary

Before listing my Top 5 Protein Superfoods, I wrote 3 qualifying statements in order to disqualify animal proteins from being among The Top 5 Protein Superfoods.

At a time when everyone it seems wants to get more protein into the diet, many of us eating way too much animal protein. Whilst a lean 200gm steak might deliver some 70gm of protein, if only 15-18% of it is being assimilated then it’s not a great source of protein. Also, if we take into account Dr Rosedale recommendation that most people should be consuming 0.8 grams of protein per 1 kg of body weight, then consuming 70gm of protein (which doesn’t assimilate well) in one meal makes questionable sense.

In the end, what I believe ought to qualify as a “Protein Superfood” is a food that delivers high quality protein that is well assimilated. After all, if our protein needs are not particularly high in the first place, then shouldn’t the focus then be on getting the purest, highest quality protein?

Include a few of the above superfoods in your diet everyday and you’ll easily get all the protein you’ll need, and better still you get all the other benefits that a true Superfood delivers.

  • Why Private Label Bulk Whole Foods & Superfoods?

Why Private Label Bulk Whole Foods & Superfoods?

/ Comments Off / in Frontpage Article/by Aaron

Here in Australia, a simple google search for “buy bulk whole foods” yields some 2,680,000 results whilst a search for “buy wholesale superfoods” yield some 277,000 results. These results certainly demonstrate a healthy appetite for buying bulk whole foods and superfoods in the Australian market place.

Just looking at the amount of online businesses that have sprung up over the last few years offering bulk whole foods further demonstrates how everyone it seems now wants to jump in and capture their share of the booming market in superfoods and online shopping.

Whilst undeniably there will always be good reasons for buying trusted brands, I firmly believe that the market has reached a level of maturity now where new players entering the online retailing market can confidently compete.

You look at online retailers of bulk whole foods or superfoods and naturally they all point to their superior quality, processing standards, and sustainability conscience as positive differentiators from their competitors. It’s remain true too that disparity in quality obviously continues to exist, so consumers need to remain prudent in who they buy from. Having said all of that though, for those of you who are passionately building high integrity businesses of your own, I say that if you’ve ever thought about having your own branded products, there is no reason why you should be holding back from doing it.

The truth is, it is not difficult to procure high quality bulk whole foods and superfoods here in Australia. In fact I would venture to say that when talking about superfoods, 90% of it is being imported into Australia through a small handful of importers, who in turn wholesale these products out to thousands of retailers.

Certainly my experience in starting Private Label Superfoods has been that isn’t overly difficult to source good quality superfoods at commercially viable cost. Furthermore if you want to put your own label on a product, that isn’t overly difficult either, given the array of easy to use design software which is accessible.

The remaining questions for creating your own branded products are really then just limited to working from an environment appropriate to food handling, and finding the time and creativity to make it happen.

The Power of Your Own Brand

Given the lack of barriers to entry into creating your own products, it’s little wonder why so many smaller businesses these days are now selling their own branded products in-store, on their websites or though mediums such as ebay.

As your business is a reflection of you, it’s natural to want to promote it as strongly and as broadly as possible.

Your own branded products, are a powerful message of confidence to your customers. Furthermore, with a compelling story behind your business, or trust in your brand already earned through your core business, adding a product line with your brand on the label can become an irresistible force to strengthening your ties with your customer base.

How Private Label Superfoods Can Help

Truth is (and as I’ve pointed out above), it isn’t overly difficult to create and market your own products these days. Any business operator with a bit of focus can launch their own product line completely on their own. The only real challenges might be operating out of an appropriate food packaging environment and then taking your focus away from your core business. There is also the matter of capital investment and then perhaps to some extent the question of whether or not in fact your customers would buy your brand to the extent that made it all worthwhile.

Private Label Superfoods was created to make it an easy decision to give this idea a shot. With as little as a $350.oo investment you are up and marketing your own branded superfoods to your customers within days. We stock the superfoods that consumers are buying and we’ve created blends that actually taste good, so that they’ll want to buy them again.

Our prices remain highly competitive against other packaged wholesale superfoods promoting their brand, yet through us, you’ll promote your own brand.

Finally, if our standard label design doesn’t quite meet your requirement, there are little things we can do to customize it to your liking (or you can always provide us with your own design) and we’ll use that.

If your passionate about your brand in health, giving your customer the best foods on the planet, with your brand on it presents the classic win-win.
